Goodbye, 2012.

Hello Readership!

With merely days to go til 2013, and my New Years Eve outfit bought (it's a surprise!) ... I feel the need to round up good old 2012. This has been a really good year for me, despite being full of so many twists and turns. I am extremely happy the World didn't end, and hopefully 2013 will be even more exciting for me and contain lots of good things. Here are my highlights.

- Seeing in 2012. It was an epic time, I was extremely drunk and surrounded by good friends at a house party.

- Starting my degree in Journalism. This was unexpected, but I seriously couldn't be happier with the outcome. It's so much fun, and I am in love with the course.

- Being happy with myself.

- Getting closer to people.

- Breaking bad habits.

- Doing more of what I love.

I shall be attending a fancy dress costume on New Years Eve, not only to see the Eve in but also for my lovely friends birthday. It's going to be a great year, and I am really looking forward to continuing it in style.

I hope you all have a fantastic New Years and are having a lovely break.

I shall be back in the New Year with lots of blogs planned.

It's the End of the World (as we know it)

Today brings us just one day before the supposed "End of the World". The Mayans might have predicted the end of the World at around 2600BC. Now, if you are a skeptic like me who has dismissed every "End of the World" claim so far in life, you will be the same in thinking that this is all a load of tosh. However, with the hype surrounding it, and "Mayan claims" it's hard not to get sucked into the whole "will it or won't it" debate. Even my daily paper has articles on it every day, and I believe my paper to be pretty reliable. Or for crazy people. You decide.

I am, for example, half tempted to attend one of the many "End of the World parties", and get exceedingly drunk. That way, if a massive un-seen meteor does hit Earth, the impact will be minimal on myself. I can look extra glamorous, put on all my best perfumes and smell some what like a whore-house and dance my last minutes away.
I could also ring up every person that has made a difference in my life, and thank them for everything, whilst explaining we are all going to die soon and I need to get this off my chest. However, the men in the white coats may appear and, if the World does not end, that would hardly be productive.

At first I was saying to myself, "the World can't possibly end now, I've only just begun real life". That was extremely selfish of me. I have been really blessed with the 22 years I have received so far in this life, and with all the World disaster, I think I have done a lot better than some. And for that I am truly thankful, and hope for a better World soon.

Which brings me to the next theory. A little bird told me, the 21st is not the "WORLD CRASHING DOWN AND BURNING DEAD" end that is marked by the date, but simply a day of new order. A day where the world will change and become a better place. That's not something to turn my nose up at. It sounds pretty ideal to me in all honesty, with the way certain places in the World are going.

Pictured: the Mayan's started this filthy rumour.

Maybe we should take this chance as a new start. Take your anxiety about the end, and turn it into something positive. Re-evaluate your life. What if the World did end tomorrow? Would you be happy with what you have achieved so far? Are you happy with yourself? It's the sort of thing I seem to feel I would more likely think about when I am old and on my death bed, and hopefully lived a happy and fulfilled life. But the harsh reality is, life is borrowed, time is borrowed and you are even borrowed. Use it wisely.

If the World does end this Friday (21.12.12), so be it. But maybe it's just a wake-up call, and maybe we should stop taking things for granted in the life we have been given.

Ps... I don't think I have ever typed the word "World" so much in my life!

I hope you have a brilliant weekend, and let me know of any strange happenings!

If it happens, I hope you go out with a blast! (Please excuse my sick sense of humour)...

University Deadlines and Christmas Stockings

The past few weeks have been a flutter of deadlines and presentations. As I am a warrior, I managed to complete all 3 portfolio's a week before the deadline! Go me! This means I have a week to myself, just before... you know what. It's Christmas time. Despite the constant water dripping from the Heavens, I am insanely excited. (And even better than all that, the majority of my Christmas shopping is all done, wrapped and sparkling under the tree).

As I am busy making plans, I thought I would take some time tonight to show you my top Christmas stocking fillers. I will get to that in a minute. Firstly, and slightly more importantly, on Wednesday I am off to see "The Hobbit". I am extremely excited, and of course I will be giving you guys a review when I get back.

 Check out the trailer:

How amazing does that look?! I will let you know how it goes.

Moving on to slightly more sparkly, materialistic blogging, here are some of the awesome stocking fillers I have come across whilst Christmas shopping! If you are stuck for gifts, I believe there must be something for everything in this bundle of delights. Please click the image to see it clearly.

All of the above are from the trusty www.asos.co.uk, and of course they offer speedy next day delivery!

I hope you are all enjoying the rush before Christmas, and looking forward to spending time with loved ones.

 Happy Pre-Christmas, everybody...

I am so sorry. I had to. ;)

Women Wars

Gone are the days where the typical woman was wooed, married and settled down by 25. My parents themselves where married and had their own home, and child on the way at 24. This scares me slightly. I myself, am 22 years old and there is probably a very slim chance I will ever achieve that in a short 2 years. Why, you may ask? The simple answer is University and my career.

Seemingly, women these days are leaving it later and later to start family life, putting careers first and climbing the ladder of success. However does this worry me? Not more than it should, possibly. I want to achieve so much, so is this possible with a family in tow?

Of course it is. Simply swap your last minute Mojito nights for evenings cooking and chilling out in front of the TV. The world offers so much for "career" women these days and has got with the times. It is possible for a family girl to have a job, attend University and kick start her career. With so many government childcare for equal opportunities to those who choose to start family life early, gone our the days where a woman had to choose between bouncing babies and crisp designer suits.

And of course, there is the other side of the coin. Men taking on the roll of "house husband" and living life at home, looking after the children and doing the housework. While the woman are the main bread earners, 100 years ago this would have never even crossed the minds of those macho men. In such dismay to men, women are even climbing the salary ladder a lot faster than one may think.

It is amazing that there is so much choice these days. Sometimes you feel overwhelmed and question whether you are doing the right thing in life, like a lost kid in a sweet shop. As cliché as it sounds- things all make sense in the end. There have been so many times in life where things have not gone my way, but it's always ended up to be perfect for me when it all pans out.

I myself am not ready to give up my flamboyant nights out, and waking up on days off at silly o'Clock in the morning (cough - afternoon); but I can feel myself "growing up" as it is as well. Gone are the days I'd roll in at 2am most mornings, and here are the possibly one-night a week cocktails and chill time talking about my week with close friends. The recent recession made life harder for many in the UK, causing strain in every part of life. People's careers where put on hold, and many had lost a sense of direction. Myself included.

In a way this has been a blessing. It's made me and other think long and hard about what they want to do for the rest of their life. It is also important to respect the chance to be able to work and see it as such a blessing.

For now, I am going to continue doing what I have always done. Let life pan out. Of course, you have to work hard to make your dreams come true- but don't be too disheartened when things don't go your way. Everyone is on a different path in life, and this is true. My top tip so far in my short life is to do what you love and surround yourself with who you love. Life is too short to do anything different.

Going back to my original comment, maybe it's not such a bad thing tables are turning and women have more choice these days. Without sounding like a complete feminist- we have fought for years for this to happen. Take chances and enjoy all the opportunities that have been presented to us.

If that's not something to smile about, I don't know what is.

Meet Boris...

Meet Boris, my funky new Christmas deer! I love him.

Northern Ireland: Not So Notorious

Northern Ireland: City Escape or Country Retreat? It offers both.

Who said you need to travel far and wide to see places of wonder? Why not hop on a plane or take the ferry from UK mainland and visit Northern Ireland. Easy Jet offers cheap flight plans, and booking in advance on the ferry can mean saving money. Whether you want to do it on the cheap or have a mini-break blow out, Northern Ireland offers many options to suit everyones taste pallet in life. That's what makes it so wonderous. There is so much to discover, and here are my top 5 suggestions.

5 top tips for a Beautiful Belfast Bonanza:

1) The accent. Disliked by some, loved by most. This is such a quirk when it comes to visiting the beaut that is Belfast. "Wee" is a word used a lot, so don't be alarmed. Being asked for your "wee credit" card whilst paying is perfectly normal, even though we all know my credit card is no smaller than anyone else's.

2) Ulster fry. Think of an English breakfast. Pretty perfect, right? Just imagine that with the country's famous soda and potato bread. It has to be tasted to be believed. Instead of your dreary toast, they offer two types of fried bread. I suggest you head to Maggie May's to experience such delight: http://www.maggiemaysbelfast.co.uk/index.php

With a bumper fry being only £5.99 it's not going to break the bank!

3) Experience the night life. Special nights offer punters the chance to enjoy a pint of Guinness and listen to traditional live Irish music. With a euphoric and enjoyable atmosphere that is hard not to soak up, be transported to a world of jigs and joy. Lavery's Bar is one of my favourites, a traditional Belfast hole in the road.

4) Visit the Giants Causeway. The North-East coast offers a beautiful wonder which is made by "super natural forces". The unique display includes 40,000 basalt columns that were formed when lava cooled fast 60 million years ago. Or why not learn the alternative story about an angry giant?

5) The troubles of Northern Ireland have been well documented in the news. Why not take a bus or taxi tour and be educated and shown interesting cultural divides and places of interest? Learning about the controversial bright wall murals and prisons make for a really interesting day out.

Organised tours are available, I suggest you book one!

Marvellous Children's Rhyming Books: Pat Hatt

These rhyming books by the wonderful Patt Hatt are available on amazon, here:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Boo-The-Backyard-Zoo-ebook/dp/B00869N266

Search for specific copies!
Above image is from "Swashbuckle Chuckle"

These are my opinions.

Boo and the Back yard Zoo
By Pat Hatt
Awarded: 4.5/5 stars
Age recommended: 3 plus. Great for teaching rhyming and learning to read.
Follow Boo, a very friendly ghoul, in this glorious illustrated picture book. Suitable for children aged 3 plus, either as a bed time story or even a learning reading aid. With a magnificent and heroic story plot, you will be taking poetically through the night with Boo and his friends, with many twists and turns. Who will end up Heroic? The nasty Nugget or Boo and friends?
This is definitely a must have for your child’s book shelf. The rhyming words keep children of all ages interested, and it really opens up their vocabulary. The images are beautiful, and will please all children; although the younger kids who like visual aids will really appreciate the vibrancy and detail.   I can imagine this being an amazing bed time story, and fill your child’s head with great and imaginary thoughts.   What are you waiting for? Rhyming is fun, and this story is full of it!
Swashbuckle Chuckle
By Pat Hatt
Drawn by Caleb Wallace
Awarded: 4/5 stars
Age recommended:  I would say this would be suitable for ages 6 plus, younger if reading with parent.
Another magnificent story and rhyming book from the wonderful Pat Hatt, accompanied by exciting and colourful pictures by Caleb Wallace.
Follow the drama filled story of the Leaping Laughs Village as their wonderful golden fountain gets stolen. It is soon found that the Evil Captain Frown Clown and his pirates are responsible for such a crime.  One shoe Kangaroo decides this will simply not do, and heads off to save the fountain with only a picture of the perpetrator at hand.
Will the village fountain be saved?
What twists and turns are in store?
This rhyming book is full of exciting revelations, and the unexpected. It is an enjoyable read, with Pat Hatts classic rhyming. Great for children who enjoy pirates, and action.
Get ready for the dual!

Cassie and The Wild Cat Meet and Greet

By Pat Hatt

Stars awarded: 5/5!
Age recommended: 3 plus
Cassie is left feeling disgruntled when the human brings home another wild cat. There is only one solution-the wild cat must go. Cunning Cassie thinks of many ways to rid of this intruder, but is she successful? Finally her plan seems to work. However, things take a strange turn. What could this be?

This story is amazing. I may be slightly biased as a cat lover, but I really felt the personality of the animals shine through and was gripped from the start. Purr-fect if you have a feline friend! Once again, Pat manages to rhyme smoothly, with a delightful story and beautiful images. Become friendly with Cassie in this book, you will end up loving the story ending. A typical day in the life of a cat.

Remember, Remember the 5th of November

Plymouth was illuminated for the evening.

Monday the 5th of November 2012 brought a spectacular firework display to Plymouth Hoe front.

Bracing the cold, and wrapped in my scarf and gloves, I headed up only to be gifted with a bad cough today. It was definitely worth it however, with the display starting at 8pm and lasting fifteen minutes. Music blasted through the crowd, with classics from James Bond and much to my enjoyment, the very popular "Gangnam Style". Rum was a much welcome added extra, and you could pick up warm food/coffee or even a pint in the local stalls around the venue.

The fireworks flew and danced to the music, which was an amazing touch. The crowed "oo'd" and "ahh'd" at a perfect display, with a great turn out of the night. A company from Surrey called Pyrovision was responsible for such an amazing stage show, with music from Stage Electrics.

With the bonfire near by, it was soothing to watch with the brilliant Plymouth Sound in the background. If you were feeling adventurous, there was a chance to try out one of the many rides that would tip you backwards, forwards and upside down!

All in all, it was a great evening and I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite the cold breeze. Before the awesome fireworks, the crowd which flocked in its hundred were treated with music from a Lady Gaga tribute artist (Sam Chapman), Felicity Dukes, Plymouth street dance Beat-Breakers and duo Natalie and Cotty. Sam Chapman sounded spookily similar to the real and wonderful Lady Gaga!

Internet Inspiration

So, the air is getting cooler and reading week has just commenced for university students far and wide. The perfect chance to sit back, relax and take in what you've just learnt over the last few weeks. I kid, of course-it's to catch up on reading and do some precious uni work ;).

What will I be doing this week?! You may ask. Well, nothing too exciting... just essay plans, partying, bowling and the odd event! But more on that later.

Anyway, the purpose of this post is to advertise a website I have recently found whilst browsing on-line through boredom. I am a sucker for pretty images, inspirational quotes and beautiful photos. I found a website called "We Heart It" and it was so easy to set up an account and start collecting my favourite images! It's a lot of fun, and I feel when I need some inspiration, I just log onto the site.

Does anyone else use "We Heart It"?

What other sites inspire you?

I shall leave you with some pictures from the site!

Have a lovely Friday.

Plan B - Ill Manors

"Every action has a reaction."

Once again, Ben Drew has managed to turn something grotty into something beautifully creative.

Ben Drew also known as the famous lyricalist "Plan B" has created a heart stopping, realistic portrayal of the dark side of life. Full of action, and hard truth, I was gripped throughout this film and despite the dark side I thoroughly enjoyed it. From the moment it started, I was transported to underclass Britain full of drugs, gangs and individual life stories. The film is extremely realistic, and is narrated throughout by the expert, Plan B himself. If there was any point he was trying to put across- he has done it. And amazingly well at that.

Follow the lives of people who have had the misfortune of contracting drug habits and getting into the wrong crowd, as you will be narrated through a well written and thought out film. I was amazed at how every character had such importance to the overall story, and everyone was linked somehow. It was extremely well thought out, and the soundtrack was catchy and really well written. The music set the mood of the different scenes, as it snaked through life linking situation and actions together. I would even go as far to say it had a feel of "musical meets realism".

This movie had everything I enjoyed in it. Realism, a good story line, action, and passion. It also educated me, and although I realize the whole London Gangster scene was "dramatized"; I feel Ben Drew has really got his point across. This side of life does exist.

Grab your popcorn and watch with an open mind. It's one not to be missed.

Ha-Ha-Ha-Halloweener

Halloween is fast approaching. It is the perfect excuse to dress up, have some fun and tell some crazy ghost stories. Whilst browsing online on one of my favorite online retailers, www.newlook.co.uk, I came across a range of Halloween costumes which are exclusive to online purchases. These outfits are really cute in my opinion, ready made, and not your typical "black bin liner  Halloween fashion. I have fallen in love with all of them. Sadly, Halloween is only one night of the year, so choose wisely. I have picked some of my favourites to show you!

Last year on Halloween I had several parties to attend to got to dress up in many different costumes. I really do love fancy dress, it gives you a chance to be someone else for the night and possibly wear something a little out there and crazy. Why not get your friends round and serve scary cocktails filled with jelly worms, and maybe even have a prize for the best costume?

The potentional is endless at this time of year.

As well as that, New Look has some really hot winter fashion out at the moment. The prices won't break your bank, and everything is really well made and true to size. Go on and treat yourself!

My personal Top Tips for Morning haters!

I am not a big fan of early mornings. At night, I am wide awake and can't seem to sleep, but when the morning comes around it's a completely different story and I am literally super glued to my bed.Why is bed so much more comfy in the morning? Especially cold October mornings!

Anyhow, seeing as I am trying to complete a degree, I cannot hide forever in a dreamy slumber whilst the morning runs away from me. It's just not going to happen. Luckily for me, I only have one really early start a week so I can't complain! However, when I start working as well as studying, I am going to have to manage my time better.

What are your tips for waking up in the morning? What gives you that lift? How do you start your day? Sorry for all the questions, but I am always looking for tips and tricks on the subject of being an early birdie.

- Set your alarm an hour before you plan on waking up. I have a habit of hitting the snooze button a few times before I actually wake up. It makes me feel like I am having a "lay in".
- Make sure there is water by the side of your bed. This is not to chuck over oneself, but I always find drinking first thing wakes me up a bit.
- Pump out the tunes! I always turn my iTunes on. High energy songs are great!
- Start your morning routine.
- Coffee or tea it! :D

Be strict with yourself!

Once you are in a routine, it gets easier... and hell, you can actually get a lot done during the morning so your day feels more productive!

Hope everyone is well.

I am busy studying, reading for university and generally enjoying life.

Smile :),

Jessica

Plymouth Mela 2012

Sunday the 23rd of September 2012 brought an explosion of colour, music and dance to Plymouth City Centre. It was in aid of the Plymouth Mela Festival 2012 which celebrates the beauty and life style of Southern Asia. The whole day was packed with events from 11 in the morning until 3.30pm, and Mela festival goers were spoilt for choice. The various acts included Bollywood Dance explosions, Thai dancing, performance poetry and Sam Kay who I've heard has quite a name for himself in the Asian music industry. I enjoyed Sam Kay's act and enjoyed listening to his work on Youtube as soon as I got home. Sam has reached over 2 million Youtube hits! The dancers and acts certainly did not mirror the dreary Plymouth weather outside, and it was a fabulous day for all involved. I sat in awe of the colourful outfits and delicate dancing. It was also interesting to see diversity in the centre of your own city and to experience different walks of life without even so much as having to get on to a plane. I was transported to Southern Asia and beautiful sights without leaving the environs of Plymouth! The whole day was planned to perfection and showed off South Asian arts in an amazing light. Natasha Koshti's Bollywood dance group also performed, and the act was full of life, colours and joy. In light of the Olympics just happening, the party continued today as "The Dhol Foundation" performed for Plymouth City centre. The Dhol Foundation was part of the Olympics closing ceremony so I felt really excited to be there and watch them. The whole festival was an excellent insight and very educational, and most importantly full of fun and talented people. Let us hope for many more cultural events in and around Plymouth! For more information on the event, check out www.plymouthmela.co.uk.
