Being an Adult Isn't Too Shabby...

When you are at high school, you usually imagine your 20s to be that far off place that will never ever come around, and if it does it will not be for what seems like a life time away. I used to laugh when "older" people would comment on how quickly everything changes, and how fast the years go by. I never ever thought that would be something I would say, shaking off their comments and getting on with whatever was important in my current 14-year-old life at that time. Fast forward 10 years later, low and behold, the future is here. It's right now. We are always told to enjoy our youth, as it’s the best years of our lives. Growing older however doesn't mean losing the fun you had as a youngster. In fact, it opens a world of opportunity and has many keys that unlock many doors! Here are some of the awesome things I’ve personally found out about growing older...

1) You get the choice of what to do every day, (within reason), who you live with and what country you settle in. You’re no longer your parent’s shadow.

2) You can go to bed whenever you want. You're an adult now. If you want to stay up to 4 in the morning- that's your choice. You don't have to hide that torch under your sheets and listen out for someone who may come and tell you to "get to bed, NOW!" Downside: you also realise you don't quite have the energy you did as a child, and you cannot wait for nap time.

3) You choose what to do with your life. You don't need anyone's permission. (Within reason...) If you want to dye your hair pink? Go for it! That breed of dog you've always wanted and slightly obsessed over by watching videos online? You can have it.

4) Your hormones calm down. Those angsty, teenage years with melodramatic moments do mellow out, usually. Of course you will still have your bad days, but they are usually met with a more rational mind. Experience is priceless.

5) You've made lots of mistakes in your teenage years, and have learnt from them. Now is your chance to grow as a person and realise what you want to do and what you don't. That hard transition from child to teenager has been accomplished. High five!

6) You can sit and enjoy drink in a sophisticated setting. Gone are the days of drinking cheap liquor on a cold, park bench.

7) You get the chance to earn your own money and make your own choices about how that money is spent (once rent and bills are paid for, of course!)There is satisfaction in this. You could save up and travel the world if you really wanted, and yes, you could do that all alone.

8) You learn that in life, you usually get out of it what you put into it. Friendships are a two way thing. Working hard and reaping the benefits is always awesome.

"An attack on one is an attack on us all"

http://blog.prideinplymouth.org.uk/

Yesterday brought the sunshine and it also brought "GAY PRIDE" to the city of Plymouth. Gay Pride is growing more and more every single year, and it is an absolutely fantastic, well thought out day. Quoted as a day that is about "bringing people together"- and that it definitely is. So many people came together to make it awesome, and namely Ricky-Lee and Jazmine who put on such a fantastic display. The crowds where entertained from early noon to evening- and that is definitely a task in itself. I am happy to say they succeeded and there was not a moment where I was not in awe by what was in front of me. I will forever support causes that will stamp out the horrible hate that still sadly surrounds the world we live in.

Check out my snaps from an extremely successful Pride. I am insanely excited for next years already.

Well done all who made it great!

Keep Your Cool (when it's not so cool...)

August is just around the corner, and lately here in the UK it has been painfully humid. That is me being dramatic by the way, I appreciate we have a very cool climate; however I am simply not used to this sticky heat. I enjoy being fresh and keeping cool...

There are many products and tips out there that will enable you to do just that. I have compiled a list of some of my favourite items for this humid heat! They are also perfect if you are lucky enough to be jetting off somewhere exotic soon...

L'occitane Hyrdra Vital Face Mist, 50ml, £12.
"The Angelica Hydra Vital Face Mist instantly refreshes and hydrates the skin at any moment of the day: in the city, on an airplane, at the beach, or after exercising. "

Hats are definitely in. Look glamorous in this floppy, straw hat Topshop is offering. Imagine sipping a cocktail on the beach wearing this beauty!

Plait band straw floppy hat, Topshop, £25.

Keep hydrated! Volvic Juiced, RRP £0.99p 500ml. Available at most leading supermarkets.

Replenish your Electrolytes with citrus and water. This is a vital part of keeping healthy in the heat.

Keep cool in gorgeous light, floaty clothing. This sundress does the job perfectly. Available at ASOS, this Aztec Anicaml Sundress comes in at a purse friendly £25.

Protect your skin!

Korres Walnut & Coconut Face & Body Suntan Oil SPF 20

£20.00
This suntan oil will MAKE you want to put it on, believe me. Sun protection can be a bit of a chore, and the worst kind are the white thick textured ones that take ages to sink in. This product has changed all that fuss however. It's as luxurious as a suntan oil can get.

Gelly Nail Effects!

     Aloha!

Summer is here. Well kind of, I do live in England so I can't really say much about summer. The sun was very kind for a few weeks last month... but sadly it seems to have disappeared. We have been promised a heatwave pretty soon though so I'm looking forward to that. I haven't even managed to get sunburn yet this year. I know how crazy that sounds, but usually a shock sun burn to a British person is a common occurrence. We don't usually expect hot weather, so we head out one random "alright" looking day- and voila. We are lobster red. Well, probably just me and my Irish skin.

Come on heatwave!

One thing that does bring a bit of summer to my life however is brightly coloured nails. One thing I dislike about brightly coloured nails? Chips. I am slightly obsessive about chips in nail polish. One chip makes me dissolve my whole manicure with my toxic pink nail polish remover. Or, it sees me repeatedly topping up my colour and wasting time like no other. You know, you can't get much done when you are waiting on your nails to dry? As some say, it's the only time a lady is ever hopeless. ;)

I love the idea of gelish polish- long lasting colour. But I hate the fact I can't do it myself and I find it hard to indulge in a day at the nail salon just for colour. I want it all, without the time and money.

Low and behold, I stumbled across "Gelly" by Barry M.

As I type this, I have the beautiful lilac shade of "Prickly Pear" staring back at me from my perfect, and still chip free nails. Each polish is a purse friendly £3.99. There are so many pretty shades to choose from, and it really does give that "gel" effect with long lasting coverage that I was after.

I think next on my list is "Green Berry"...

Available in selected chemists as well!

Camping!

I am definitely someone who acts on impulse. Last week, I really wanted to go camping. So, on Saturday, my other half and I headed off on a last minute camping trip. I am lucky enough to live about a 10 minute drive from Cornwall, which opens up a variety of camping hot spots and sites.

We ended up in Perranporth in a lovely little campsite called "Tollgate Farm". Highly reccomended to anyone wanting somewhere to camp! Glorious staff and extremely helpful. There is even hot food available for those who want breakfast or an evening meal.

The best bit was however, the little farm section on the campsite. I met a rather lovely pig. I am a sucker for animals.

Perranporth also had a pretty amazing beach bar called "The Watering Hole". Right on the beach and fabulous.

Enjoy my pictures from this weekend!

Note to self: must remember socks and warmer bedding next time...

BB: Beat Bullying and Combating the Problem

I was lucky enough to be involved with the "Beat Bullying" campaign, and even trained to be a cyber Life mentor. Beat Bullying is a fantastic charity that helps thousands of people each day.

Bullying is sadly extremely common these days. Meet anyone, and 99% will tell you they feel they have been the victim or bullying or some sort of cruelty in their life. But this got me thinking. If most people are claiming to have been bullied, who is doing the bullying? If so many people are against bullying, why does it still happen? I have never met anyone who has told me they are FOR bullying.

I have been thinking about this for a while now; and have come to the conclusion that bullying starts from us. Yes, you and I. If you are someone who believes they are not contributing to the problem, stop reading now. And well done on being so lovely, amazing and perfect. Well done for never saying a bad word about anyone or anything unprovoked. Well done for not slating someone to a friend for no particular reason. Well done for sticking up for someone who you feel is being wronged when it's right in front of your face.

I hope I don't come across as arrogant when I say that. But I think the first step is people admitting more needs to be done and we need to start with ourselves. (Yes, myself included. I am definitely not up on some ivory tower here.) I think we can all say we have said something bad about someone at one time or another behind their backs. I think the worst thing about bullying is sometimes, some people don't even realise they are doing it. And this is where things need to change.

The next time you feel you are saying something about someone who has not done you any harm, think to yourself- why? Is it kind? Would you like someone to say it about you? If it got back to the person, would it hurt them? And more importantly, why do you want to hurt that person? If there is no real reason, I suggest you think about your actions.

Of course, as humans we annoy each other now and then. This is completely normal! But at what point does it become victimising and just not necessary? I feel we need to become more aware of our actions and words.

Don't get me wrong. There are some people in life who are cruel and unkind. Some people are bullies. 100%.  And no one understands why. I am completely aware that people have undergone some absolutely cruel victimisation and in the worst case- bullying that has led to suicide. I hope no one ever feels they are alone and isolated. I hope no one ever feels that there is no one there to help- there is. I promise you. People do care.

Never feel your problem is too big or too small. Every problem matters, no matter how insignificant you may feel it is.

This is where Beat Bullying comes in. Beat Bullying has reached out using a tool that most people use today- the internet. They offer help and support in the form of fully trained, lovely online mentors and counselors in a pretty awesome chat room. They want to help. If you're having a bit of a bad day, or you don't know who to turn to- speak to them. They even help if you're worried about someone else! Simply visit the Beat Bullying chat room here: http://www.beatbullying.org/

Don't worry about people knowing it's you- it's anonymous!

If you have a bit of free time on your hands, why don't you sign up to become a mentor?!

All mentors are fully trained. Sign up here for any information on training sessions that may be in your area soon: http://www.beatbullying.org/gb/get-involved/become-a-mentor/

Mentors are aged 11-17 and have been trained by BeatBullying staff to support and help other young people.  They can help by chatting about general stuff, or by talking about something that’s worrying you. They can also tell what sections are where on the site.

LifeMentors are just like mentors, except they are aged over 18. They can remember what it feels like to be a young person and are great if you want to talk to someone who’s a little bit older.

PS before you go, do something positive! Check out the Beat Bullying Big March here: http://bigmarch.beatbullying.org/

Let's put an end to bullying.

Delicious Home Made Pizza

Today I was naughtily craving pizza. Things got worse when the post came, and a long with it came a flyer for a local take-away pizza outlet with discounts. I swear some days the world is out to personally get you.

I decided to combat the naughty and (still with discounts included) over priced pizza staring back at me and headed into the kitchen to make my own delight.

Mine may not look as perfectly round as I made it by hand- but let us just call it quaint. It still tasted delicious.

This pizza is quick and easy to make, and you can use up random ingredients you find in the kitchen for the toppings too- bonus!

Flat bread base:
  • 350g/12oz plain flour, plus extra for dusting (I 260g as it was just me!)
  • salt and black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 150-200ml/5-7fl oz warm water

    Toppings:
  • (You can personalise this to your taste!)
  • Tomato purée
    Touch of ketchup
    Mature cheese
    Frozen prawns
    Sweet corn
    Rocket
    Salt and pepper

I simply made the base, spread it out into a rough pizza like shape. You can spend more time on this if you want something a little more aesthetically pleasing. Alas, it was just me I was cooking for so I wasn't that fussed...

Place the dough on a non-stick baking and place in a pre heated oven. I cooked this pizza by eye as I wasn't really following any recipe. I left the base in there for about 8-10 minutes. I then took it out and added the toppings (apart from the rocket). I place it back in the over for another 8 or so minutes, keep watching, took it out when ready and added the rocket- voila!

My home made pizza was complete. And completely free.

Give it a whirl...

I apologise for my lack of detail, but it was literally this simple.

Hello Sunshine, Hello Barbecue

The moment the sunshine comes out in the UK it seems so do the barbecues. Everyone loves a barbecue! My favourite thing this summer will definitely be barbecued chicken with peri peri rub. It tasted amazing! Here are a couple of pictures from my Saturday cook off.

I am definitely excited to experiment lots more- hopefully we get a gorgeous summer here!

Revolution Plymouth- Foodie Friday

         www.revolution-bars.co.uk

Revolution is not somewhere I'd usually consider having a fabulous meal at; but recently in Plymouth it has undergone a revamp. Sleek yet comfortable, this is definitely a new hot spot for cocktails and yummy food galore.

Friday came and so did the opportunity to indulge myself in a few much needed cocktails; hello the month of university deadlines and naughty food.

We were greeted by an extremely friendly and helpful waitress.

I arrived during happy hour- bonus! The cocktail menu is small but it does the job. It has every well known cocktail on it with a few extras. I started off with a "Bubblegum Sour" and added a "Manhatten"...I'm not going to turn down happy hour, am I?!

Bubblegum Sour is a new favourite. I could indulge in those all night!

We then spotted 3 "small" dishes for £10. What a steal. These would be perfect paired with a few cocktails or in our case; a pretty impressive shared starter. We went for the garlic flat bread, goats cheese bon bons (wow) and chicken skewers with herbs.

Delicious! These are definitely something I would love to try more of; and will be the next time I go for a few cheeky drinks.

It was time to order our mains. They have a great range to choose from; including some pretty impressive pizzas and sides. I opted for the blackened chicken burger and my companion opted for a "Sloppy Joe" pizza. No meal was over £10 from what I saw, and the food was better than I expected for what basically are pub food prices.

(Check out those cute mini pizza cutters!)

The pizza was traditional, crisp and with ample toppings. Servings are generous and will even leave the biggest appetites satisfied. My highlight was definitely the beautifully cooked fries and "home made" styled coleslaw!

All in all I was impressed. This beautiful venue will definitely be on my go-to list in future for any fun and frivolous outing I may have the urge for!

Cleanse & Polish™ Hot Cloth Cleanser Liz Earle

I have to admit, I am slightly late to this party. For years now, I have heard nothing but good things about this cleanser; but the price has always put me off slightly. My regular cleanser is around £6 and it does the job. I always have been cynical about over priced creams and cleansers- ever since I kept reading articles about them all being basically the same thing and them all having the same ingredients.

After having some skin trouble over the winter period, I was on the look out for a new skin product to sort it out. I have combination skin so I don't exactly go for targeted products. This cleanser is the most awarded cleanser in the UK so I thought I'd bite the bullet and just go for it. And I am happy I did!

Naturally active ingredients include eucalyptus and cocoa butter for smoother, cleaner skin.
Suitable for all skin types

The cleanser is a hot cloth cleanser which is incredibly soothing. It has a herbal smell to it which also relaxes me. It comes out as a soft, cream which you rub onto your face directly in circular motions and use the muslin cloth to remove the product. I was left with fresh, soft and deeply cleaned skin.

The cleanser is plant-based and boasts it's abilities at taking off even stubborn makeup. I can vouch for that. I actually enjoy taking my makeup off with this product; which is a first.

100ml cost £14.75 which really isn't that bad for such a quality product. It does last a long time too. If you are thinking about getting this product and are slightly unsure- I suggest you go for it! I hope you love it as much as I do.

Summertime, it's your time!

Amoung the rain and hail, I can see slight peeks of summer popping through my window. I am insanely excited. Of course it's only Spring but I am sitting on my seat waiting for this alleged heatwave hitting Britain this summer. Winning!

Currently on my Easter holidays from University (no rest for the wicked however- deadlines, deadlines deadlines); I have booked a mini break for some much needed sand and cocktails in a few weeks. I'm insanely excited! Of course, in my usual style, photos will be plentiful.

With a new season comes new shiny, beautiful things for me to buy. Not good for those of us prone to shopping-slightly-too-much. New Look, as usual, has some beautiful pieces. Here are some of my favourites from today!

I do love a bit of nautical.

Here's to a new season and a new wardrobe!

Should wealth be inherited?

Inheriting wealth rather than earning wealth is gaining money through material goods through the means of a person passing or gifting you money and material possessions. It’s a popular practise in upper-class families, and keeps the wealth constant through the family history- usually passed down through the family in order to keep a house or to keep the family at a constant class level. It’s very much “keeping it in the family”, however, there has always been controversy about money and it’s a very controversial subject. It is sometimes seen as unfair, with not everyone getting the same opportunities to gain wealth or get a head start in life that money may bring them. There are some people who inheriting family businesses, gaining millions and yet there are people who work hard day in and day out just to keep their heads above water. The debate about whether wealth should be inherited has happened for centuries, causing family splits and bitterness among people. Not all is bad however, with families having the opportunity to give loved ones a gift at the sadness of their passing, and giving them more opportunity in life. People who have worked all their life, only to get inheritance tax by the government are in uproar. Why should their hard earned savings be put in the hand of the government? And isn't their money theirs to give to whomever they please? It’s an issue that is individual to each person, and it’s only possible to scratch the surface in this article about the different circumstances or issues that may come about when inheriting wealth.
There are plenty of pros when it comes to inheritance. It gives people a head start in life. It’s hard enough to get on the property ladder these days; so many young people rely on inheritance from elder family members in order to get a financial head start. It also keeps your money in your family; which may mean protecting the family name and wealth you may have built up. It’s a popular practise in middle class or upper class families, and it keeps their class constant throughout history. Even a small inheritance can go towards education or business opportunities that bring a better life to all. There is also the fact that it won’t go in the governments pockets (well, at least some of it won’t); and why should someone’s hard earned money that they have saved all their life go into a system where they don’t know where it will end up? It gives a person control over their life, and a purpose for saving or buying an estate. It is a person’s money, and after all it’s theirs to spend how they choose. However, it’s not all as clean cut. Some people inherit millions from family members, yet seem to have no prospects or purpose. They are simply known for being rich- which tends to give them a privileged air over others. It’s argued that these people are undeserving of their wealth- and everyone should be given the same start in life.
This brings us to the cons of inheriting wealth. Inheriting wealth can create a divide between classes and people. It’s sad but true that money does open a lot of doors in life- you just have to look at the difference between third world countries and first world. Why shouldn’t everybody be given the same start in life? Obviously that would be insanely difficult to put in place- but to an extent it is an extremely valid point. Inherited wealth creates more advantaged people with more opportunity. Those who have worked hard all their life may feel belittled or scorned meeting somebody such as Paris Hilton, who, by chance has walked into a life of luxury and mansions just because she was born into her rich fathers Hilton network. You can also inherit a money mess. When a loved one dies, it’s one thing to have to go through a basement full of boxes and quite another to get stuck with the departed’s debt. A person could have died unexpectedly, intending to sort out their debt beforehand. Tax liens and debt could be now your problem. This leaves us wondering, if it’s not all sunshine and rainbows- how much responsibility do we have for someone else’s wealth?
The government stance on inheritance is pretty much, as long as they get inheritance Tax they are happy to let inheritance happen. The inheritance Tax threshold is currently £325,000 and stands at 40% of anything above this threshold. The executor of personal representative for the person who has died pays the inheritance Tax using the funds from the estate. This has to be paid within 6 months from the end of the month of which the person died. The money is split between the individuals if the person has written a will, and if not it will go to the married or civil partner of the deceased. If there is no surviving spouse or civil partner, it’s distributed between any surviving children- and goes throughout the family in order of blood line. Eventually, if the money has no place to go- it goes to the government who puts it into government funds.
There are plenty of famous faces who are famous for inheriting wealth. Some people call inheriting wealth luck, and others just say that it’s being born into the right circumstances. Sam Branson is the son of Sir Richard Branson, and is worth an estimated $3.8 billion. He is the man behind Virgin, a well known company that is famous for Virgin Records, Virgin Atlantic Airways and Virgin fuels. These are not all they provide and the list is endless. Sam is due to inherit the wealth, but it would be interesting to see just how involved he is in his father’s business- something that I believe will show his true character when it comes to the sensitive subject of money. Then there is Ivanka Trump- the daughter of Donald Trump. She is due to inherit all her father’s personal wealth and estate. However, she is very involved in the family business and is vice president of real estate development and acquisitions of the Trump Organisation. It’s good to see someone with such wealth still working in life, something that I feel would really lack in a person’s character if they simply just lived the life of luxury with no real input into working and gaining independence. Paris Hilton is a very famous heir, and seems to have forged a career for herself simple from inheriting money. Critics say that Hilton epitomizes the title of being famous for being famous and she is an example of the modern phenomenon of the “celebtutant”… this is the celebrate who is famous not because of their talents but because of their inherited wealth. Hilton sees herself as an icon, and personally, it’s not an icon I’d like any future daughters adoring.
Socially and economically, it’s sad to see that individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds receive less inheritance and wealth. It’s common throughout history that individuals with a substantial amount of wealth often intermarry with similar classes- therefore creating a cycle of privilege. This creates a hierarchy system, which ultimately divides society.
There are some things to think about when it comes to inheritance.

-          Who deserves money?
-          How to you differentiate?
-          Should we all have the same chance in life?
-          Should those inheriting wealth be forced to live a certain type of lifestyle?
-          If it any different to winning a cash prize?
-          Should hard working individuals get taxed, even whilst dead?
I decided to conduct a survey to find out what people thought. I conducted my survey using an online survey website, survey monkey. 10 people answered my survey, with 7 people saying “yes, money should be inherited”. Some of the reasons included: “I think the person whose wealth it is should have the choice. In a way they already have. They can chose to spend their savings on themselves when they retire of can chose to save it for their children for example.” Another said, “Yes, you should be able to inherit but it would be prudent to cap it at something like 2 million”. 3 out of 10 people however said no, they didn't think wealth should be inherited. The most popular reason for this answer was it was “unfair”. Sadly, not many people who said no gave a reason as to why it should not be inherited. There are a few issues with the survey, such as it was based on a small demographic and I am unsure of the age/background/class or wealth of the people who answered.

In conclusion, I do believe that wealth should be allowed to be inherited. If your parents want to leave you money, then why not? As long as people work hard in life and never lose sight of what is real, there should be no problem. I don’t believe that wealth should be a “career” however, and feel embarrassed by people who are famous for simply just having money and spending it crazily. In this world, it’s important to know the value of money and never leave sight of that. If you do inherit billions, the moral thing to do would be to help out the world with things such as poverty and charity. There is never enough money when it comes to such issues. This is all dependant on how much you get, of course. A “regular” person may just get enough to perk their life up, enable them to go to University or purchase their first home. Some people in life of course won’t get any, but I don’t feel they should let it control them, in the same way that people who may get inheritance let it consume them. You shouldn't rely on it, and never let it change your character. Life is full of ups and downs, and sometimes it’s unfair. This will never change.
